Perceptions, Mt. Hood Community College’s annual magazine of the arts, needed a fresh and cohesive visual design for its latest 100+ page issue. With a long legacy dating back to 1969, the challenge was to create a layout and cover that honored the magazine’s tradition while engaging contemporary audiences.

A cover was composed to visually captured the college’s geometric and brutalist forms, using gridded composition and constructivist typography.

For the interior, a clean, adaptable layout system that could support a wide variety of content types while maintaining readability and flow was devised following from the cover grid.

The redesigned issue offered a refined yet accessible reading experience. The cohesive visual identity helped unify the diverse content and reinforced the magazine’s role as a vibrant, student-led platform for creative voices across genres.
